Many diabetics, indeed, would like to know what type of hard candy is suitable for them.
This question probably relates to diabetic candy, says Susan L. Besser, MD, with Mercy Medical Center, Baltimore, and Diplomate American Board of Obesity Medicine and board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
Dr. Besser continues, Those hard candies use a non-absorbable sugar substitute. The body doesnt recognize it as sugar so it doesnt raise the blood sugar. The body just eliminates it.
On the other hand, this sugar substitute can cause massive diarrhea if you eat too much of it.
I dont really restrict my patients by telling them not to eat hard candy. I recommend moderation.
Hard candy isnt really the best choice. Its pure sugar , but sometimes a single piece of hard candy is okay, and it doesnt really matter what kind.
The diabetics body wont know the difference between the sugar in the hard mints, peanut brittle, lemon drops, cherry Life Savers or Skittles. Its the same sugar.
The variable is the amount. Ten grams of sugar from Brachs will have the same effect in a diabetic as would 10 grams of sugar from some Jolly Rancher pieces or Werthers caramels.
Sweets Like Candy And Cake Are Off
Sweet treats — like candies, pies, cakes — were once off-limits for people with diabetes. Not anymore. In fact, research has shown that starches like potatoes and white bread affect bloodglucose levels much like sugar — causing sometimes dangerous spikes in blood sugar. Carbohydrates found in most vegetables or whole grains don’t affect blood sugar as much. Counting carbs and choosing the healthiest of them is more important than eliminating sugar altogether. A little sweet treat is OK. If you’re at a wedding, for instance, you can have a small slice of cake — very small. Just substitute it for another starchy carb you might eat, like a small potato or a piece of bread. If you really have a sweet tooth, choose desserts, candy, and sodas made with sugar substitutes. Many artificial sweeteners have no carbs or calories, so you don’t need to count them in your meal plan. Others have carbohydrates that are absorbed into the blood more slowly than table sugar, so they don’t pose a threat to your blood sugar levels.
But once you come off sugar and sweeteners for a few weeks, your body and taste buds will adapt, and you wonât need or crave as much sweetness. Fruits and other natural foods will taste sweeter and more satisfying.

What About Weight Gain
Chocolate is high-fat and delicious. According to the Department of Agriculture, it is also high-calorie, with about 140 calories per ounce. In comparison, an ounce of bread has 60 calories and an ounce of cheese has 110 calories. To get 140 calories, you would have to eat 2 large apples, ¾ cup of pasta, or 1 pound of cauliflower.
Dont high-fat, great-tasting, and high-calorie add up to a formula for weight gain? Actuallyno! At least, not among people who eat it in moderation. This may be because:
- Chocolate has insoluble fiber, which is linked to lower weight.
- Eating chocolate can improve mood.
- Eating chocolate may reduce levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin.

Healthy Homemade Almond Joy Bars
There are certain flavors that you miss when you strip your diet of most processed foods and sugar. Most cravings can be satisfied with natural foods, but particular taste memories require you to get creative. One of my absolute favorite candy bars was the Almond Joy candy bar, a chocolate coated candy bar with a sticky sweet coconut filling . My roommate, Bethany, reminded me of this old obsession a couple of nights ago when we were having a quiet night in, doing homework and socializing in the dorm kitchen.

How To Make A Low Carb Turtle Recipe
Recently a reader asked if my homemade low carb caramel sauce could be used to make sugar free caramel candies or low carb pecan turtles. I love caramel candies especially the combination of caramel, nuts and chocolate so I tweaked the recipe until I hit upon something that worked. For this low carb turtle recipe it boiled down to ingredient proportion and cooking time literally!
The procedure for this sugar free erythritol caramel differs from a traditional caramel recipe but couldnt be easier. Brown the butter, add the heavy cream, erythritol, and Sukrin fiber syrup and simmer/boil for 20 minutes for a softer stickier caramel candy, and 30 minutes for a firmer caramel candy.
Dont skip the fiber syrup. I believe it helps discourage the erythritol from re-crystallizing. If youve ever made a dessert with erythritol before only to have it become crunchy a few days later, that was the erythritol pulling itself back into crystalline form. To prevent that from happening in my low carb dessert recipes I use less erythritol and augment sweetness with stevia.
This low carb caramel candy recipe uses stevia to give it a bump in sweetness and it needs the extra sweetness to achieve the proper flavor. In anticipation of being asked, I do not think an all Splenda caramel sauce is possible. But, if one is allergic to stevia or particularly sensitive to the taste, a few drops of something like EZ-Sweetz would do the trick to sweeten it nicely.
