Sensors can stay in place for about a week before they have to be replaced and are accurate enough to replace frequent finger-stick testing. A blood glucose meter or CGM tells you what your blood sugar level is at the moment. Your doctor may also send you for another type of blood sugar test that tells you how your blood sugar levels have been for the 3 months before the test.

There is simply no known cure to type-2 diabetes. There is no known treatment that will eliminate the disease completely. I Tried The Keto Diet To Manage My Diabetes This Is What Happened
Health and wellness touch everyone’s life differently. This is one person’s story.
When Lele Jaro received a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes in 2006, she didn’t leave the doctor’s office with a complete understanding of how the condition would influence the rest of her life, or fully equipped with the tools she’d need to manage it.
“When I found out I had type 2, I didn’t really know how to feel about it. I was so young and, to put it bluntly, naïve about the whole diagnosis,” she recalls. “They gave me medication, some information what to eat if you have diabetes, and that was it.”
Her doctor told her that she’d probably been living with the condition since she was in her teens. “The symptoms of type 2 diabetes creep up slowly without you really knowing the damage that it’s already doing to your body,” she says.
“I thought it was something I could eventually overcome. It wasn’t until I got pregnant at 29 when I realized that type 2 diabetes is a serious, chronic disease,” she says.
After working out and following her doctor’s diet recommendations, she managed to lose about 60 pounds by 2008.
But when it came to actually managing her diabetes, relying on weight loss simply wasn’t cutting it. Though she followed her doctor’s advice, it became increasingly clear to Lele that she’d need to take matters into her own hands and develop a means by which to manage her diabetes that didn’t leave her reliant on medication.
Why Reversing Diabetes Depends On Sustained Loss Of Weight
So here’s the rub: Weight loss may be easy initially — but what’s hard is keeping it off. “Weight loss maintenance is vital, and you need to have appropriate strategies in place,” says McCombie.
That’s the key. Otherwise, you’re at risk for slipping back into your old habits. If that happens, your numbers can go right back into the diabetes range, says Martha McKittrick, RD, CDE, based in New York City. “When people are first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, they become really strict, and start exercising and controlling their diet. They may even see their blood sugar numbers come down to normal levels. They lose weight, and are happy and relieved. But after a couple of months, the motivation goes away; most people return to their old habits, and diabetes comes right back,” she says.
There’s also something called the weight set point, in which losing weight gets increasingly challenging as you drop pounds due to a loss of metabolism.
McKittrick agrees that many people aren’t aware of just how important losing weight is when you have type 2 diabetes. “I think that if they really understand — that if you shrink your fat cells, you will be able to use the insulin more effectively, therefore you can produce less insulin, so in a way you are ‘saving’ your pancreas from overworking and eventually not being able to make enough insulin — they may be more willing to make permanent changes,” she says.
Can You Reverse Type 2 Diabetes
While certain lifestyle changes are key to managing diabetes, whether you can actually turn back time so that it’s like you never had is a different matter. That depends on how long you’ve had the condition, how severe it is, and your genes.
Fasting Blood Glucose Levels
OK….the standards say that fasting blood glucose levels from 70 to 99 are normal, from 100 to 125 are prediabetes, and higher than 125 after fasting or any blood sugar reading of 200 or higher is “diagnostic” for type 2 diabetes. Now…these numbers are not scientific absolutes, like the speed of light.
For instance, the Diabetes Prevention Program beginning in 1996 showed that people with prediabetes reduced their risk for progressing to a diabetes diagnosis by 60 to 70 percent by changing their lifestyle habits, losing a modest amount of weight, and getting educational and goal setting support.
A follow-up study showed this success held for 15 years…they stopped the typical “prediabetes to type 2 diabetes” progression. So, would it be correct to say “that’s all good for prediabetes, but if you ever meet the definition for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes….like a fasting blood glucose of 132 instead of 122 for prediabetes…. then everything changes”? Of course not. These lifestyle changes can make a huge difference wherever you find yourself.
