Does Coffee Affect Fasting Blood Sugar

+ Circadian Clock Melatonin

How does bullet proof coffee affect my blood sugar?

Something all individuals practicing intermittent fasting should be aware of is that caffeine in coffee can reset our daily or circadian biological rhythms. Intermittent fasting also impacts of our circadian rhythms, usually in a positive way if we eat in tune with our daylight and active hours and fast longer overnight. But drinking coffee, especially later in the day, can delay our circadian melatonin rhythms by 40 minutes or more depending on the dose. Cyclic AMP actually plays a role here too the rising and lowering of cAMP levels helps our cells keep time, so to speak. By preventing the degradation of cAMP, caffeine lengthens the period of cellular circadian rhythms.

In other words, when exposed to caffeine our cells go through a kind of jetlag where their days get longer.

In summary, caffeine intake in the form of coffee can impact our circadian rhythms and lower our production of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Its best for this reason to confine your coffee intake to early in the day, especially if improved sleep is one of the benefits youd like to glean from your daily intermittent fasting practice.

Intermittent Fasting Reduces Blood Sugar

The benefits of intermittent fasting extend far beyond weight loss. Studies show it can reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease because it improves the regulation of your blood sugar, increases your resistance to stress, and suppresses inflammation.

A case study published in the US National Library of Medicine showed patients with type 2 diabetes who participated in an intermittent fasting protocol lost weight and managed to stop insulin therapy. In studies where weight loss didnt occur, fasting still improved the glucose levels of participants.

This latter finding is significant because it confirms that a reduction in bloodstream glucose is not a secondary benefit of weight loss, but a direct result of intermittent fasting. This reduction in blood sugar could be due to the changes in signaling pathways and metabolic rhythm that fasting invokes, as well as an increase in ketones.

Improvements in blood sugar tend to be dependent on fasting. Your blood sugar will typically improve after 2-4 weeks of compliance with a fasting protocol, and it dissipates if you return to eating three meals or more per day.

You may be able to maintain your weight loss after you stop fasting, but long-term fasting is recommended if you need to continue to regulate your blood sugar.

How Much Caffeine Is Too Much Caffeine

In general, the FDA has recommended 400 mg of caffeine as the maximum limit a healthy adult should drink a day. If you already have diabetes, however, a lower limit may be beneficial. For some people with diabetes, drinking more than 200 mg of caffeineor half the amount for a healthy adultmay negatively impact blood sugar.

  • Lipid profile or cholesterol test: This is one test that doctors require many people to get with todays diet of high-fat and high-cholesterol foods. The doctor will probably tell you to drink only water and not to eat anything for up to 12 hours before the phlebotomist draws your blood. Doctors test for what is called good cholesterol, bad cholesterol, the total number of cholesterols and triglycerides or other types of fats.
