An individuals risk of developing T2D is determined by a complex interplay between genetic and environmental/lifestyle factors. In humans maternal and early-life nutrition is known to influence the risk of T2D in offspring . Further studies will be needed to clarify the emerging role of epigenetics in the etiology of T2D.
