What Should I Know About Side Effects Of Diabetes Medicines

Side effects are problems that result from a medicine. Some diabetes medicines can cause hypoglycemia, also called low blood glucose, if you dont balance your medicines with food and activity.

Ask your doctor whether your diabetes medicine can cause hypoglycemia or other side effects, such as upset stomach and weight gain. Take your diabetes medicines as your health care professional has instructed you, to help prevent side effects and diabetes problems.

Different Types Of Metformin

Metformin comes as 2 different types of tablet: standard-release tablets and slow-release tablets.

Standard-release tablets release metformin into your body quickly. You may need to take them several times a day depending on your dose.

Slow-release tablets dissolve slowly so you do not have to take them as often. One dose is usually enough, and you’ll take it with your evening meal.

Your doctor or pharmacist will explain what type of metformin tablets you’re on and how to take them.

Metformin is also available as a liquid for children and people who find it difficult to swallow tablets.

What If I Take Too Much

An overdose of a large number of metformin tablets can cause serious health problems. The symptoms are severe and quick to appear.

Osteoarthritis According to a study published in May 2019 in Arthritis Research and Therapy, metformin can help people with obesity and osteoarthritis. What Is Metformin Used To Treat

How To Take Metformin 500mg

Metformin is used to treat type 2 diabetes – the form of diabetes in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or builds a resistance to it.

Insulin is a hormone that plays a role in the way your body takes up and uses sugar for energy. When your body does not produce enough insulin, sugar builds up in the blood, leading to serious problems like kidney problems, eye problems, heart disease, nerve damage, loss of limbs, and even death.

Metformin cannot be used to treat type 1 diabetes, a condition in which the body produces little to no insulin at all.

It is important to note that metformin is meant to work alongside diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes to lower your blood glucose levels and bring your diabetes under control. Metformin alone is not sufficient to treat your blood glucose imbalance.

How Does Metformin Work

Metformin belongs to a series of medications known as biguanides. This family of drugs decreases the amount of glucose your body absorbs from food and limits the amount of glucose your body naturally produces. Metformin also enhances your bodys response to insulin, a hormone responsible for regulating your blood glucose levels. The combined effect of these actions helps keep your blood glucose level under control.

Metformin For People Who Do Not Have Diabetes

The CEO of Diabetes In Controlread about this and found it fascinating as have a lot of people. We reached out to members of our advisory board and asked:

Your patients may have asked about it or, if not yet, they most likely will. What is your comment on whether you recommend metformin for people who do not have diabetes? If you do not, how do you respond to patients who ask about it? If you do, what do you tell your patients? And what do you say to your patients when their other health care providers tell them this is a diabetes drug and they should only be taking it if they have diabetes?

    Dr. Stuart Weiss:

Just like with most medications, there are good and bad side effects in using metformin. I have patients who complain of bad news and those who hear positive news. Recently, the news on metformin has been more positive. From anticancer to effects on telomere length, there are great reasons to consider dedicated clinical trials using metformin in answering specific questions. A year ago, it was a different story. Who knows where we will be five years from now.

As far as recommendations for metformin use in non-diabetic people, there is too much unknown about long-term outcomes to be broadly using metformin as an anticancer or longevity enhancing drug. There is more health promoting effects of healthy eating and an active lifestyle.

Sorry, there is no shortcut! !!!

In the past 2 decades, metformin has become a mainstay of type 2 diabetes management and is now the recommended first-line drug for treating the disease in the United States and worldwide.

Available in the United States since 1995, metformin is an attractive therapy for clinicians and patients alike. Studies have found the agent to be safe and effective, and at about $4 for a 1-month supply of the generic, that option is affordable at a time when many prescription drugs are being priced out of reach for some patients.

Metformin is the first drug of choice, by all standards,Oluwaranti Akiyode, PharmD, RPh, BCPS, CDE, professor and clinical pharmacist at Howard University School of Pharmacy, told Endocrine Today. Its a rarity that all experts agree on something. It is time-tested, proven, has good efficacy, a good safety profile and its cheap. Metformin has been around long before it came to the United States. Thats why I find it amazing that we only have one drug in that class.

    Is Metformin A Wonder Drug

Effects Of Taking Metformin Without Food

Ever wonder why certain medications are called “wonder drugs”?

Sometimes its because of the tremendous health benefits the drug provides for a particular condition, like insulin for type 1 diabetes or antibiotics for pneumonia. Or, it might be because the drug is good for many different conditions: aspirin has often been called a wonder drug because it can relieve pain, treat or prevent cardiovascular disease, and even prevent cancer.

Could metformin be joining this list? Its approved in the US to treat type 2 diabetes when used with diet and exercise by people ages 10 and older. But in recent years, interest has grown regarding its potential to prevent or treat a variety of other conditions, including aging. Yes, aging. If thats true, “wonder drug” might be an understatement.
