Study Finds Drinking Green Tea And Coffee Help Diabetics
The study, published in the British Medical Journal , tracked 4,923 Japanese people with type 2 diabetes over five years using a self-reported questionnaire. The researchers found that drinking a high number of cups of green tea daily was associated with a lower risk of death and the odds decreased as the number of cups of tea increased: One cup daily was associated with a 15 percent lower risk, while four or more cups or more daily were linked with a 40 percent lower risk.
Among coffee drinkers, one daily cup was associated with 12 percent lower odds of dying and increasing this to two or more cups lowered the risk further by 41 percent. However, the risk of death was even lower for people who drank both green tea and coffee, with the lowest risk of 63 percent occurring among those who drank four or more green teas a day and two or more coffees a day.
Its important to note, however, that any observational study does not establish “cause,” meaning the fact that they drank more tea and coffee may not be the reason they lived longer, but one small piece of a larger lifestyle puzzle. Moreover, the type of green tea available in Japan may not be the same as elsewhere, and self-reported consumption is subjective and inaccurate.
Despite these general caveats, other research has suggested that compounds called flavonoids in green tea and coffee are beneficial against disease risks such as heart disease and diabetes.

Research from the Centre for Nutrition, Exercise & Metabolism at the University of Bath looked at the effect of broken sleep and morning coffee across a range of different metabolic markers.
Writing in the British Journal of Nutrition the scientists show that whilst one night of poor sleep has limited impact on our metabolism, drinking coffee as a way to perk you up from a slumber can have a negative effect on blood glucose control.
Given the importance of keeping our blood sugar levels within a safe range to reduce the risk of conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, they say these results could have ‘far-reaching’ health implications especially considering the global popularity of coffee.

What Exactly Is Diabetes
With diabetes, your body is either not producing enough insulin or not using it efficiently . Insulin is a hormone that is normally released by your pancreas to help you take the sugar you eat and move it into your cells where its converted into energy.
If you cant make insulin or your body cant use it, your cells wont be able to absorb sugarand it builds up in your blood instead. This can lead to hallmark symptoms of diabetes like excessive thirst and urination, tiredness, and dizziness. Diabetes can also increase your risk for serious complications like kidney disease, vision loss, nerve damage, and heart disease.
Caffeine And Insulin Resistance
A study consisting of 10 people with type 2 diabetes set out to determine the impact of regular caffeine consumption on overall insulin levels.
All participants were regular coffee drinkers, consuming about 4 cups of coffee per day, but they all stopped drinking coffee during the study. Then half of them were given capsules containing 250 mg of caffeine, and the other half were given placebo pills containing zero caffeine.
The result, according to the study: On the days the patients took caffeine, their bloodsugar levels were 8% higher. And after every meal including dinner their blood sugar spiked higher than it did on the day they had no caffeine.
Does this mean people with diabetes shouldnt drink coffee and other caffeinated beverages? Not necessarily. It means we should look closely at our caffeine consumption and moderate it just like we would with other things that impact our blood sugar levels.
Just because black coffee and green tea contain zero calories doesnt mean we should drink them without limits. Instead, caffeine should ideally be something we consume carefully and set personal limits around for the sake of our overall diabetes health.
