The two main diabetes awareness symbols are the blue circle and the grey and blue ribbon. There are many diabetes organizations with their own brands and logos. Beyond Type 1 has adopted the dotted tear drop. Children with Diabetes has the yellow smiley face.

Here at Diabetes Advocacy, our symbol has evolved from a phoenix with a grey ribbon into the phoenix with the blue circle. It reflects our rising from the devastation of a type 1 diabetes diagnosis and embracing the community we are part of.

How Do I Register An Awareness Ribbon Color Or Design

Diabetes Awareness ribbon vinyl decal

Awareness Ribbons are not a centralized idea, there isn’t really an official place to go to register a design, or color. Currently, awareness ribbons are considered to be in the public domain in most countries, and a simple ribbon of a particular color is generally not considered sufficiently original and/or creative enough to be copyrighted by a person – or group. However, in a few cases several particular designs have been granted a special trademark status. Eg. Canada has granted “official mark” status for the pink awareness ribbons to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

A Brief History Of Awareness Ribbons

The awareness ribbon made its debut in 1979. The very first ones were literally yellow ribbons tied around an old oak tree. They were used to support the American embassy during the Iranian hostage Crisis.

Perhaps the biggest moment in ribbon history, though, came in 1991 when Charlotte Haley created pink ribbons to bring attention to breast cancer. Her ribbons were so successful, they became the symbol for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and inspired more colors for other causes, such as red ribbons for the AIDS movement in the 80s.

From that point on, ribbons were a popular part of raising awareness. The New York Times even named 1992 The Year of the Ribbon in their publication. Today, theyre widely used by non-profits, charities, fundraisers, and other organizations around the world.

Pair With A Relevant Message Or Call

You want your marketing, whether its a social media post or a giant banner, to be extremely clear at first glance. Some causes share the same color, which is why your words are a powerful part of the message.

Take a look at some good examples!

Katie Robertson, a 21-year-old with Marfan Syndrome, used this image to raise awareness on her blog, Tissue Tales. Her post cleverly incorporates the red ribbon, while also encouraging her readers to learn more information about her condition.

The Headstrong Foundation, which raises funds to fight cancer, has the green ribbon appear as shoelaces in their logo. At the bottom, they feature a slogan that lets you know exactly what theyre all about.

Dover Oil Company, a trucking company in New Jersey, showed support for Childhood Cancer Awareness with a gold ribbon banner on their trucks. The message is loud and clear and invites people to take action and create change.

The Diabetes Tattoo That Started It All

Diabetes Awareness Month Clipart

This is where this page began, with my own tattoo. Here is my story.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month and so November of 2006 seemed the appropriate time to have a diabetes awareness tattoo created.

No one in my immediate family had a clue that I was even considering this. My oldest son was shocked. My youngest told me I took after him and was tough! Despite the initial shock, the reaction to my diabetes awareness tattoo has been the sameWow!

The tattoo artist created two hearts for my two childrenequal in my love. He added a touch of color that reflected their birthstones. He kept hues soft and loving while adding in a Diabetes Awareness ribbon. The drop of blood reflects the blood my son parts with every time he checks his blood glucose levels.

The fit is perfect for my shoulder. The concept is a reflection of my heart.

In June of 2017, I had the image retouched as 11 years of showers had faded the original work.

What Is The Symbol For Diabetes

In 2006 the United Nations adopted the blue circle as the international symbol of diabetes. Before that, there was no single, universal symbol. Many people in the diabetes community were using a grey ribbon in hopes of replicating the recognition power of the pink cancer ribbon and the red AIDs ribbon.

The original grey diabetes awareness ribbon sometimes had a drop of red blood added to it. There was also the use of a red ribbon representing the American Diabetes Association.

In 2006, the International Diabetes Federation put out a call to create a new diabetes symbol. They wanted to find a symbol that would be recognized by everyone in the world. Kari Rosenfeld and her daughter Clare had just the symbol. They created a blue circle.

Help A Patient With Leg & Foot Ulcers

Sometimes insurance isnt enough when the only medication that gives you hope costs more than insurance will provide. This requires thousands of dollars in co-pays or other out-of-pocket costs. Hundreds of patients, many whom are diabetic, who are being treated are choosing between their health and their familys financial livelihood.

No one should have to suffer losing a limb because they cannot afford treatment.

    What Is The Diabetes Symbol

The United Nations created the diabetes symbol in 2006, and it is a blue circle. Before 2006 there was no universal symbol of diabetes. Most of the people were using a grey color ribbon to represent diabetes.

Plus, people also attach to the shirt as the pink cancer ribbon. Therefore, the united nations thought to create a right and unique sign for diabetes.

Besides, the grey ribbon has a red blood drop. A few years later, the American Diabetes Association started using the red ribbon symbol to represent diabetes. Thus, it became necessary to create a symbol of diabetes that would be universal.

Therefore, Karo Rosenfeld and Clare made the symbol of diabetes that had a blue circle with the red blood drop inside it.
