Bring this diary with you when you go to your doctor as s/he will be quite pleased but don’t alter or fudge your results in an attempt to please your doctor this will prevent the appropriate changes to be made in your management.

Have a blood sugar chart on your phone or a written notebook nearby to compare your numbers

For my patients during the class entitled, Monitoring your Blood Glucose, I pass out individual notebooks, and packs of different colored highlighter pens for pattern management. Inside, there are copies of an enhanced blood sugar log.


Patients log their blood sugars at different times of the day, and color-code them with highlighters. This helps patients to pick out their blood sugar patterns, and to do different things to adjust their blood sugars to get them in a target range.

Patients may either take a walk following a high carbohydrate meal, take more insulin if they are correcting blood sugar with insulin, decrease the amount of carbohydrates at the next meal, etc. By seeing what their blood sugars are at different times of the day, they can work their blood sugars into their target ranges. Once blood sugars are in the target range, their A1C should also be on target.

Normal blood sugar levels in a person without diabetes can result in an A1c as low as 4.6 or 4.7 percent and as high as 5.6 percent.

Just a decade or two ago, it was rare for a person with type 1 diabetes to achieve an A1c result below 6 percent. How To Measure Blood Sugar Levels

There are two main ways to check your blood sugar levels:

  • Blood glucose test. There are many at-home devices such as finger-prick monitoring kits or continuous glucose monitors that you can use to measure blood sugar on your own.
  • An A1C test.A1C is a blood test, conducted by your doctor, that describes your average blood sugar levels for the past three months.
  • Type 1 diabetics, along with some type 2 diabetics, who require insulin medication, must check their blood sugar at least four times per day, says Mathioudakis. Typically, this should be done before a meal, one to two hours after a meal, and at bedtime.


    The timing of these measurements can help determine how much insulin to use. For example, it can be important to use more insulin after a high-sugar meal, or to avoid falling into hypoglycemia while you’re sleeping.

    To check your blood sugar at home, you should use blood glucose tests, such as a glucose meter or continuous glucose monitor . Both devices measure blood sugar with the unit mg/dL, which means a milligram of sugar per deciliter of blood.

    If you don’t have diabetes, but you may be at risk, your doctor might have you take an A1C test during a yearly check-up. This test reports results as a percentage the higher the percentage, the higher your blood sugar has been in the past three months. Those with diabetes should get an A1C test at least twice a year and sometimes every three months.

    Who Is Most At Risk For Developing Diabetes

    The following categories of people are considered “high-risk” candidates for developing diabetes:


    • Individuals who are overweight or obese
    • Individuals who are 45 years of age or older
    • Individuals with first-degree relatives with diabetes
    • Individuals who are African-American, Alaska Native, American Indian, Asia American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islanders,
    • Women who developed diabetes while they were pregnant or gave birth to large babies
    • Individuals with high blood pressure
    • Individuals with high-density lipoprotein below 25 mg/dl or triglyceride levels at or above 250 mg/dl
    • Individuals who have impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance
    • Individuals who are physically inactive engaging in exercise less than three times a week
    • Individuals who have polycystic ovary syndrome, also called PCOS
    • Individuals who have acanthosis nigricans — dark, thick and velvety skin around your neck or armpits

    In addition to testing the above individuals at high risk, the American Diabetes Association also recommends screening all individuals age 45 and older.

    What Should My Blood Sugar Level Be

    When you’re first diagnosed with diabetes, your diabetes care team will usually tell you what your blood sugar level is and what you should aim to get it down to.

    You may be advised to use a testing device to monitor your blood sugar level regularly at home.

    Or you may have an appointment with a nurse or doctor every few months to see what your average blood sugar level is. This is known as your HbA1c level.

    Target blood sugar levels differ for everyone, but generally speaking:


    • if you monitor yourself at home with a self-testing kit a normal target is 4 to 7mmol/l before eating and under 8.5 to 9mmol/l 2 hours after a meal
    • if your HbA1c level is tested every few months a normal HbA1c target is below 48mmol/mol

    How Can I Treat Low Blood Sugar

    If youve had low blood sugar without feeling or noticing symptoms , you may need to check your blood sugar more often to see if its low and treat it. Driving with low blood sugar can be dangerous, so be sure to check your blood sugar before you get behind the wheel.

    Carry supplies for treating low blood sugar with you. If you feel shaky, sweaty, or very hungry or have other symptoms, check your blood sugar. Even if you dont have symptoms but think you may have low blood sugar, check it. If your blood sugar is lower than 70 mg/dL, do one of the following immediately:

    • Take four glucose tablets.
    • Drink four ounces of fruit juice.
    • Drink four ounces of regular soda, not diet soda.
    • Eat four pieces of hard candy.

    Wait for 15 minutes and then check your blood sugar again. Do one of the above treatments again until your blood sugar is 70 mg/dL or above and eat a snack if your next meal is an hour or more away. If you have problems with low blood sugar, ask your doctor if your treatment plan needs to be changed.

    Here are some other lifestyle and medicinal treatments that can help treat hypoglycemia:

    • Eat a healthy diet full of whole foods that are minimally processed.
    • Take prediabetes or diabetes medications as recommended by your healthcare provider.
    • Use a glucagon kit in emergencies. Glucagon is a hormone that raises blood sugar levels quickly.

    Life with type 1 diabetes poses lifelong challenges for every member of the family.

    People with type 1 diabetes should:

    • Test blood glucose levels three or more times per day and adjust their insulin through injections or an insulin pump.
    • Ensure insulin doses are balanced with food intake and level of daily activity. People with type 1 diabetes may experience low and high blood sugar levels, which should be carefully monitored and managed.
