Hba1c Test For Diabetes Diagnosis
An HbA1c test does not directly measure the level of blood glucose, however, the result of the test is influenced by how high or low your blood glucose levels have tended to be over a period of 2 to 3 months.
Indications of diabetes or prediabetes are given under the following conditions:
- Normal: Below 42 mmol/mol
- Prediabetes: 42 to 47 mmol/mol
- Diabetes: 48 mmol/mol
There are two types of blood sugar levels that may be measured. The first is the blood glucose level we get from doing finger prick blood glucose tests. These give us a reading of how high our levels are at that very point in time.
The second is the HbA1c reading, which gives a good idea of our average control over a period of 2 to 3 months. The target blood glucose levels vary a little bit depending on your type of diabetes and between adults and children.
Where possible, try to achieve levels of between 4 and 7 mmol/L before meals and under 8.5 mmol/L after meals. The target level for HbA1c is under 48 mmol/mol .
Research has shown that high blood glucose levels over time can lead to organ and circulation damage.
Keeping blood glucose above 4 mmol/l for people on insulin or certain medications for type 2 diabetes is important to prevent hypos occurring, which can be dangerous.
Your doctor may give you different targets. Children, older people and those at particular risk of hypoglycemia may be given wider targets.

Yes, fasting can raise your blood sugar levels if you have insulin resistance.
With this condition, when you wake up in the morning after going for all those hours without food, your blood sugar levels will typically be at their peak before they go back to normal over the course of the day, even when you are consuming foods rich in sugars.
Fasting brings about certain hormonal changes in the body that result in a rise in blood sugar levels. In people without insulin resistance issues, the increased blood sugar triggers the release of more insulin which gets the blood sugar levels back to normal.
However, insulin resistance is not the only culprit as far as increased fasting blood sugar levels go, the foods you had before the fast also play a role.
But generally, when you fast, your body releases hormones that encourage the body to create glucose from stored energy.
So, in cases of inadequate insulin or insulin resistance, glucose levels can get too high. However, for people with proper insulin response, the fasting levels of blood sugar never get too high as the body will respond appropriately by releasing more insulin to ensure there is no excess glucose in the body.

Ketosis becomes a slightly more complicated topic when it involves people with type 1 diabetes or that are otherwise completely reliant on insulin.

Choose High Fiber Foods
When choosing carbohydrate foods, look for foods with more fiber as it has a minimal effect on blood glucose levels. Fiber also provides other benefits: You are likely to feel full longer when you eat high-fiber foods, and consumption of high fiber foods can also help you to lower your LDL cholesterol.
High-fiber foods are generally plant-based foods that are closest to their whole form. For example, an apple provides fiber while apple juice provides none. Whole nuts provide protein and fiber but nut butters and nut milks often have sugars added during processing and may boost your carb intake.
What To Do If Your Blood Sugar Levels Are Lower Than Normal
Blood sugar levels that are below 70 mg/dL are known as hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include heart palpitations and feeling lightheaded, jittery, irritable, fatigued, or sweaty.9
Low fasting blood sugar levels can occur if you have diabetes and your medication does not match your carbohydrate intake. So its very important to let your healthcare provider know youre following a low-carb diet so they can adjust your medication to match your carb intake.
In people who do not have diabetes, low fasting blood sugar levels may be the result of a serious underlying medical condition such as an eating disorder or a tumor. If your fasting blood sugar is low and you do not take diabetes medications, see your healthcare provider.
Low blood sugar levels after eating are often called reactive hypoglycemia. This can occur in people with diabetes, as well as those with normal fasting blood sugars. How it should be treated depends on what the underlying cause is. But if you have low blood sugar and experience symptoms, you can remedy this in the short term by eating something with carbs or sugar.

What Are Optimal Blood Sugars
You can use your average blood sugar values from a home blood glucose metre;to see how youre tracking compared to optimal.
Paul Jaminet notes that the optimal range for blood sugar is between 70 and 100mg/dL .;Doctor Richard Bernstein recommends an ideal blood sugar of 83mg/dL for Type 1 Diabetics.

By the time you become pre-diabetic with an HbA1c greater than 6.0% youre well into the danger zone and its likely that your pancreas has been pumping out high amounts of insulin trying to keep up for some time and you are well and losing the battle of metabolic health. ;If youre exposed to modern processed foods then its likely that you are somewhere on the spectrum between optimal and full-blown diabetes.
Ramp Up Your Physical Activity
A growing number of studies have found that being in ketosis may be beneficial for some types of athletic performance, including endurance exercise.;In addition, being more active can help you get into ketosis.
When you exercise, you deplete your body of its glycogen stores. Normally, these are replenished when you eat carbs, which are broken down into glucose and then converted to glycogen.
However, if carb intake is minimized, glycogen stores remain low. In response, your liver increases its production of ketones, which can be used as an alternative fuel source for your muscles.
One study found that at low blood ketone concentrations, exercise increases the rate at which ketones are produced. However, when blood ketones are already elevated, they do not rise with exercise and may actually decrease for a short period.;In addition, working out in a fasted state has been shown to drive up ketone levels.
In a small study, nine older women exercised either before or after a meal. Their blood ketone levels were 137314% higher when they exercised before a meal than when they exercised after a meal.;Keep in mind that although exercise increases ketone production, it may take one to four weeks for your body to adapt to using ketones and fatty acids as primary fuels. During this time, physical performance may be reduced temporarily.
